How to Write Copy with AI That Actually Converts
Most AI copy is generic and flat. Here's the framework for writing AI-assisted copy that sounds human, resonates deeply, and actually drives sales.
Why Most AI Copy Fails (And How to Fix It)
The biggest mistake entrepreneurs make with AI copywriting is treating it like a vending machine: drop in a request, take the output, publish it. The result is copy that sounds like it was written by a committee — grammatically correct, logically structured, and emotionally inert.
Converting copy requires three things AI alone cannot provide: deep customer research, emotional specificity, and a genuine point of view. Your job is to supply these. AI's job is to amplify them.
The Foundation: Customer Research Before You Write a Word
The best copy is not written — it's assembled from language your customers are already using. Before you prompt AI to write anything, gather:
- Review mining: Collect 50-100 reviews of your product/competitors from Amazon, G2, Trustpilot, Reddit. Identify the exact phrases customers use to describe their problems and desired outcomes.
- Customer interview quotes: Specific lines from sales calls or customer interviews that capture the emotional core of why people buy
- Objection patterns: The most common reasons people say no — these become the objections your copy pre-emptively addresses
Once you have this research, AI becomes dramatically more powerful because you're feeding it real customer language, not asking it to guess.
The 4-Layer Copywriting Framework for AI
Layer 1: The Hook
Your first sentence determines whether anyone reads the rest. Use AI to generate 20 hook variants, then pick the one that's most specific and emotionally resonant.
Prompt: "Generate 20 opening hooks for a sales page targeting [audience] who struggle with [problem]. Each hook should be under 15 words and create immediate emotional engagement. Vary the approaches: question, bold claim, story opener, counterintuitive statement."

Great copy makes people feel understood before it offers a solution. Use AI to describe your customer's problem in excruciating, accurate detail — using the language from your research.
Prompt: "Write 3 paragraphs describing the problem [audience] faces with [issue]. Use this customer language: [paste review/interview quotes]. Make them feel deeply seen and understood. Do not mention the solution yet."
Layer 3: The Solution + Proof
Introduce your solution, explain how it works, and back it up with specific proof. AI handles the structure; you supply the specifics.
- Use AI to structure your benefits section (translate features into outcomes)
- Use AI to format testimonials for maximum impact
- Use AI to write the "how it works" section clearly and persuasively
Layer 4: The Call to Action
Most CTAs are weak. AI can help you write CTAs that convert:
Prompt: "Write 10 CTA button/headline variations for [offer]. Emphasize: 1) what they get immediately, 2) the transformation they're moving toward, 3) low risk. Avoid generic phrases like 'Sign Up' or 'Click Here'."
The 5 Copy Formulas That Work Best with AI
1. PAS (Problem-Agitate-Solution)
State the problem, amplify the pain of not solving it, then present your solution. Classic for a reason — AI executes it well.
2. AIDA (Attention-Interest-Desire-Action)
Guide readers through the psychological stages of buying. Works especially well for sales pages and long-form ads.
3. Before-After-Bridge
Paint the "before" state, paint the desired "after" state, show how your solution is the bridge. Extremely effective for coaching, courses, and services.
4. 4 U's (Unique, Urgent, Useful, Ultra-specific)
Best for headlines and subject lines. Test your copy against these 4 criteria.
5. StoryBrand
Position the customer as the hero, their problem as the villain, and you as the guide with a plan. AI can apply this framework to any offer.
The Editing Pass: Making AI Copy Sound Human
After AI generates your first draft, apply the "authenticity filter":
- Remove any word you wouldn't say out loud in conversation
- Cut every sentence that doesn't add new information or emotion
- Add one specific example or story per major section
- Read it aloud — if it sounds stiff or formal, it needs work
- Add your opinions — great copy has a clear point of view
